DESCRIPTION 100 years of the Post and Telecommunications Museum
The round hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the Museum fell on January 25, because on that day, on the basis of a written order, an order was issued to establish a postal museum.
Earlier, in 1919, the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs issued a proclamation to post offices and the public asking them to collect postal-related souvenirs. It did not take long to see the results, by 1939 the first exhibits were collected in the facility, the vast majority of which constitute a collection of 22,000 exhibits, today there are approximately 4 million of them in philatelic collections. The collection is constantly growing with newly issued Polish stamps, cards, envelopes and postmarks, as well as stamps issued by post offices of countries associated in the Universal Postal Union.
Thanks to the dynamic collection of subsequent exhibits donated by donors, we managed to create a unique collection in the country. It includes postage stamps numbering in the millions, stagecoaches, exhibits related to the history of telecommunications and postal utensils. The latter, created for everyday use, still delight with their craftsmanship and allow you to travel back in time.
The centenary of the Museum is not only a reason to be proud, but also a huge challenge. Today, the museum has an important responsibility not only to enrich its collection of exhibits, but also to develop educational activities that must face the requirements of the 21st century. Education and promotion of national heritage is an inherent element of the functioning of a modern cultural institution. Temporary exhibitions of the Post and Telecommunications Museum in Wrocław, apart from Polish stamps, often present foreign stamps which, apart from their obvious collector value, have great educational significance. The extensive topics presented in these small works of art allow you to convey knowledge about the world and your home country. The museum has several exhibition rooms with collections covering the following topics: History of the Polish Post, Signs and mailboxes, Telegraph and Telephone and Postal vehicles. Additionally, the Museum has a philatelic exhibition divided into Polish and foreign stamps and a Phonographic Hall. Among the museum's collections, the following are particularly noteworthy: an original two-cabin stagecoach from the 19th century, a prototype of the first Polish television set from 1947, telephones produced by the Radom Telecommunications Factory and the first Polish postage stamp from 1860. The permanent exhibitions include old writing utensils, trumpets, telephone exchanges, telegraphs as well as paintings and photographs about postal issues.
